Hobby-ist Editorial TeamThe first decision in Julian does not have to be which bakery wins. It might be whether you want a top crust that breaks into flakes or a crumb topping that becomes part of each forkful. That is a smaller question, and often a more enjoyable one. It gives you something to taste instead of a verdict to bring back.
A pie afternoon is our pick for someone who wants food to be the center of a Southern California outing without signing up for a formal class. Julian adds a mountain-town setting to an ingredient many of us think we already know. The trip makes most sense when the journey and a little time in town are part of the pleasure; from LA, it is a substantial drive for one dessert.
The topping changes the whole forkful
Mom’s Pie House explains the difference plainly in its own FAQ: its flaky top is rolled pastry without added sweetening, while the French crumb topping uses flour, butter and sugar. Those are useful facts before ordering. If you prefer tasting the filling with a more separate layer of pastry, start with flaky. If the topping is your favorite part, crumb gives you a different texture to explore.
With a companion, consider sharing two slices rather than each committing to a whole pie. Taste a little before adding ice cream or another topping if you want to notice the crust and filling. Then add what makes the dessert enjoyable. There is no rule that a comparison has to remain austere; the point is to discover your preference, not pass a test of seriousness.
Apples bring another reason to look beyond a winner. Mom’s lists several varieties it uses, with local apples when in season. Julian Pie Company describes its Original Apple as Granny Smith filling under a traditional pastry crust. That is a starting point for questions about tartness and texture, not proof that every pie in town uses the same fruit or that every apple is locally grown. Ask about the specific pie in front of you if origin matters to your choice.
Pick the kind of stop before picking the queue
Mom’s has a Main Street location and a separate Wynola setting with outdoor garden space. Julian Pie Company lists stores in Julian and Santa Ysabel. A town walk, a roadside stop and a whole-pie pickup are different outings. Choose the one that suits the day instead of assuming the busiest-looking line must be your destination.
For a first visit, we would choose one bakery and leave a second as an option. If the first stop is pleasant, stay with it. A long drive can make you feel obliged to collect several places, but too many desserts can blur the very differences you wanted to notice. The most memorable part might be one forkful or a conversation over coffee rather than a complete survey.
Hours, orders and the cost of the day
Mom’s Main Street shop is at 2119 Main Street, Julian. Its current hours are Monday–Friday 8am–5pm and Saturday–Sunday 8am–6pm. The Wynola shop has different hours. The Julian Pie Company location page lists daily 9am–5pm; use its current store information when choosing a branch. Checked October 18, 2026.
Mom’s online pickup menu listed a whole apple pie at $23.95 when checked. That is not a slice price or a guaranteed in-store total; toppings and other choices cost separately. Check the actual order before paying. The FAQ suggests calling a whole-pie order in the day before for pickup. Confirm the branch, pickup window and cancellation terms directly; do not assume a preorder is a seat reservation or a promise of no waiting.
Budget for the drive as well as dessert. There is no single LA-to-Julian journey time: route, starting point, weather and weekend traffic matter. Check current road conditions before leaving, use legal marked parking, and leave enough daylight and energy for the return. If the long mountain outing sounds tiring rather than inviting, choose a closer bakery and keep Julian for a trip when the town itself is part of the plan.
Take a preference home
If the apple becomes more interesting than the ranking, try comparing three apples at home. If you prefer a flexible food outing closer to LA, Smorgasburg offers a different kind of choice. A Julian day does not need to end with an authoritative champion. Knowing that you like the crisp edge more than the center is already something you did not know before lunch.
