Hobby-ist Editorial TeamSome children love a monster at the end of a corridor. Others would rather ask why a pumpkin glows purple. A family Halloween plan gets easier when those preferences are treated as different forms of curiosity, rather than different levels of bravery.
San Diego Zoo’s HalGLOWeen is our choice for the second child—and for adults who want a seasonal evening without making jump scares the point. The appeal is a change in mood: a familiar kind of daytime destination becomes a place for music, illuminated details and shared looking after dark. October’s Kids Free offer is another reason to consider the trip, but the most important planning question is how much day your family actually wants to carry into the night.
The evening begins at five, not at breakfast
The official HalGLOWeen schedule lists Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays within October 3–31, 2026, with activities starting at 5 p.m. The Kids Free page says the Zoo stays open until 9 p.m. for these evenings. October 2 was a member preview; it is not an extra public event date in this guide.
We would resist turning that into a dawn-to-closing endurance test. If the lights are the main reason you are coming, a later arrival with energy left can be more rewarding than eight hours of sightseeing followed by a tired child asking for the car. If animals are your priority, choose a few daytime stops and deliberately protect an afternoon break. A zoo visit does not improve merely because the step count does.
Give the night one small center
On Front Street, the Skeleton Band’s listed half-hour sets begin at 5:30, 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m.; the Boo Crew stilt-walkers appear at 5, 6, 7 and 8. Python Path at the Reptile House runs 5–9. Elsewhere the program includes interactive activities and short performances. Check the event page again before your visit; this is a current planning reference, not a guarantee every offering will run unchanged.
Our suggested first-evening anchor is one band set plus one nearby curiosity. That gives the night a beginning and a satisfying middle without requiring a cross-zoo dash. Ask your child to choose what to notice: a surprising color, a sound, or an animal detail. A child who is invited to make one decision may feel more involved than one being hurried toward a list of adult-selected highlights.
Leave room to change the plan after the first performance. A quiet observer may prefer a brief look and then a slower walk. A child who loves movement may want an interactive activity. Neither reaction means the evening failed. The ability to stop while everybody still has some energy is part of our recommendation.
What Kids Free actually means
For October 1–31, one supervising adult age 18 or older with valid admission can bring up to six youths age 11 or younger free. The official page says those qualifying children do not need tickets. Adults still need a valid ticket, membership or other accepted admission. This is a useful offer; it is not free admission for the entire family, and a 12-year-old belongs in the paid adult-age ticket category.
On October 9, the official ticket page listed an Any Day adult 1-Day Pass at $78. A $73 Value Days ticket was also advertised, but only for designated dates with advance online purchase. Verify the calendar before treating the lower price as available for your chosen HalGLOWeen night. Food and optional experiences add to the outing’s cost. Read the selected ticket’s validity and change/refund conditions before paying.
Two paying adults and two qualifying children would therefore start at $156 using the advertised Any Day adult price, before food and other expenses. That is an example, not a checkout quote. The saving is meaningful, but compare the whole trip: fuel or transport, a possible hotel, meals and the following morning’s commitments.
One detail older trip advice can miss: Zoo parking became paid in 2026. The official parking page lists general parking at $16 per vehicle per day, first-come, first-served; phone or QR payment adds a listed $0.55 processing fee. Members need vehicle registration for their complimentary parking. For a nonmember driving one standard car, the example above becomes $172 before food and other costs, or $172.55 with that payment method.
For an LA family, the return is part of the event
This is the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park, not the Safari Park in Escondido. Confirm the destination when booking and navigating. Use a live route from your own neighborhood instead of assuming a fixed LA-to-San Diego drive time. Arriving for an evening after a long drive requires a different pace from dropping in locally.
We would choose between two honest plans. For a day trip, decide the latest departure time before arriving and let the evening fit it. For an overnight, consider a simple next morning rather than adding another major attraction just because you traveled south. The hotel is an additional expense, but it may buy a less rushed finish. Neither option is automatically better; the useful choice is the one that suits your driver and your child’s usual bedtime.
Pack layers and comfortable shoes, and organize food, restrooms and meeting points before the busiest part of the evening. Do not expect every daytime animal experience to be equally available after dark. The Halloween program is a reason to stay later, not a promise that the entire Zoo operates identically all night.
A good night does not need a scare
For a closer-to-LA illuminated outing, compare Carved at Descanso. For a shorter daytime visit built around small discoveries, our Heal the Bay Aquarium guide may fit a family’s energy better.
Hobby-ist’s judgment: HalGLOWeen is worth considering when playful seasonal entertainment and a zoo day belong in the same family plan. For LA visitors, we would make the drive only when the whole San Diego outing feels appealing. Let the lasting story be the strange color your child spotted—not how many things you managed to finish.
